LEIGH Neilly claims doctors wrongly told him he had motor neurone disease when his condition was much less serious.

Leigh Neilly A MAN jailed for disability benefit fraud after being photographed playing golf is suing the NHS for £500,000.

Leigh Neilly, 43, claims doctors wrongly told him he had motor neurone disease when he actually had a less serious condition.

He discovered he didn’t have the neurological condition in 2010 as he faced benefit fraud charges.

Leigh claims he found he had Hirayama disease – another non life-threatening neurological condition.

Motherwell-born Leigh was jailed in 2012 for failing to tell the Department for Work and Pensions his health had improved.

Leigh Neilly claimed disability benefit but was caught playing golf Investigators had filmed him playing golf and riding a bike one-handed – despite his claim forms saying he struggled to walk.

He spent more than three months in prison after being convicted of failing to notify the DWP of a change in his circumstances. But he was cleared of falsely claiming benefits.

Unemployed Leigh – who moved to Silloth, Cumbria, in 2002 – has launched a legal action against NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, along with seven GPs and neurologists, claiming they misdiagnosed him for 19 years.

The dad-of-two said: “My life, my health and my family’s lives have been destroyed by me receiving a devastating diagnosis.

“No amount of money can compensate for the hell we’ve been through because of this.”

Leigh still receives welfare benefits as a result of having Hirayama disease.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lanarkshire said it would be “inappropriate” to comment.
