On the eve of the Internation-al Human Rights Day, the National Federation of Disabled-Nepal submitted a 19-point charter of demands to the government. The NFDN warns of street protests if the government failed to address them by December-end.

The demands include proportional representation of people with disabilities (at least four) in the new Constituent Assembly, a disabled-friendly constitution; a monitoring team of disabled members to oversee the implementation of laws on the protection of the rights of the disabled; free assistive devices; fund to protect those severely disabled; free education for their children; disabled-friendly public structures; and Rs 20 million funds for the Federation.

Until the end of December, the Federation plans to organise ‘peaceful awareness programmes’ across the country, including sit-ins, conferences and relay hunger strikes. As a last resort, the disabled community plans to stage fasts-unto-death.

People with special needs lack access to most public offices and facilities in the lack of necessary infrastructure.
