COUNSELOR/COORDINATOR OF DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES - The Counselor/Coordinator of Disability support Services is part of a team of professional and paraprofessional staff who provide academic, career, and personal counseling and testing services for students and community members. As a unit of the Student Services Division, the ACCESS Center offers a variety of programs and services designed to promote academic success, career preparation, and personal development, with an emphasis on the needs of academically underprepared and disadvantaged students. The appointee will serve as the principal contact with external agencies, vendors and service technicians in matters relating to ADA activities. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Student Personnel, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or related field. Experience in providing accommodations for students with disabilities in a higher education setting preferred.

•Serves as principal advocate for students with disabilities, coordinating with external agencies and providing disability resources and assistance to students as appropriate.

•Evaluates requests for accommodations, reviews documentation from qualified professionals, and maintains appropriate records and data.

•Consults with facuIty, staff and students to provide information and training related to issues and services for students with disabilities.

•Interprets and recommends changes to institutional policies and procedures regarding services for students with disabilities and accommodation issues.

•Acts as a liaison with students and faculty in implementing accommodations.

•Counsels individuals on issues involving career planning and choice of major.

•Assists students with resume preparation and job search skills.

•Advises students on academic success strategies, course selection, and academic planning.

•Provides personal counseling services focusing on crisis intervention, referrals to community resources, and personal development issues.

•Coordinates/facilitates group activities and workshops for students and community members on issues related to educational and career planning, life management, and personal development.

•Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

•Demonstrated understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

•Knowledge of learning strategies, coping techniques, resources, and accommodations appropriate for students with disabilities.

•Effective interpersonal skills.

•Excellent oral and written communication skills.

•Presentation and teaching skills.

•Knowledge of comprehensive community college concept.

•Commitment to effective delivery of services to students and other clients in a customer- friendly manner.

•Understanding of the needs of disadvantaged/academically underprepared students, at- risk groups, and non-traditional/adult learners.

•Knowledge of career development theory, practice, and resources.
