Organised by the LCWU Department of City & Regional Planning (CRP), the seminar was addressed by topnotch experts and leaders in the field from South Korea including Mr Kyung Seok Park, representative of Asia and Pacific Disability Forum (APDF)/ Korean Disability Forum (KDF) and Ms NakYoung Lee, representative of Korea Blind Women Union, who apprised the students of the struggle of Korean rights activists for the inclusion of people with disabilities in the mainstream society. According to a press release issued on Wednesday, both leaders shared their experiences and urged the students to work for the inclusion of the disabled in the mainstream society. Two different videos were also shown to the students in which several physically challenged Korean people were shown demonstrating for their rights in innovative ways. “Neither pity nor charity, people with disabilities want their rights”, Mr Kyung Seok Park said while demanding a barrier free society for all. He shared the details through videos as to how several psychically challenged people of Korea succeeded in getting Personal Assistant Services (PAS) and a transportation system for catering their needs. “But still there is a long way to go”, he said, adding his trip to Pakistan was aimed to express solidarity with the people working to achieve an inclusive society. Speaking on the occasion, Head of CRP Department Dr M Atiq-ur-Rehman said LCWU was the first university to establish an Independent Living (IL) Centre for the disabled students of the varsity. He said the IL Centre was catering to the needs of 34 blind and physically challenged students of the university. Sharing future plans for the persons with disabilities at LCWU, Dr Atiq said the entire institution would be turned into a barrier free campus.
