KATHMANDU, May 25: Women with physical disability say that their own family members are the key agents of discrimination against them.

Most of the 55 women who participated in a study blamed family members for social biases.

The study done by Pratima Gurung, a disabled lecturer at Padma Kanya Campus in the year 2010 to 2012 was released in the capital on Friday where sixty seven percent of the women said that their family members subject them to abuses.

In the study based on qualitative-quantitative method, 16.3% blamed the society for discrimination, 12.7% related it to the nation and the rest 3.6% thought that they were destined to suffer.

Physical normality and beauty spelled social security and compliments for them. Family discrimination, beginning from their birth seen as a “great tragedy,” girls face several forms and layers of discrimination and are compelled to suffer violence and vulnerabilities.

“Slipping lower and lower in the social hierarchy, they are most of time perceived as "unwanted and unproductive human resources" and are silenced,” Gurung said at the program amid presence of the representatives of various organizations for disabled and media persons.

Gurung further stressed that the concerned stakeholders, including the government and non-government organizations working for the people with disability, have failed to network and address the issue. “They should frame programs to address and implement domestic discrimination and violence to against women with disabilities. Their mainstreaming is very important,” Gurung added.
