This year learning disability week will be taking place from 19 – 25 August 2013 to celebrate and raise awareness of people with a learning disability and their families.
Less than one person in five with a learning disability work (compared with 1 in 2 disabled people generally), but we know that at least 65% of people with a learning disability want to work. Of those people with a learning disability that do work, most only work part time and are low paid.
Northumberland County Council , Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group work closely together with people with learning disabilities and other partners through the Northumberland Learning Disability partnership Board to provide a range of services and opportunities involving people with learning disabilities and their families to live healthy fulfilling lives.
Councillor Susan Dungworth said “It is really refreshing to hear what is being done around the learning disability groups. People with learning disabilities have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else. There is a need to support people with a learning disability to make whatever contribution they wish to make.”
The Pink Ladies and the T Birds will be making their appearance on Monday 19 August from 10.30am to 12 noon, when service users from North Star in Berwick will be wearing their costumes from their latest drama Grease at Berwick Infirmary, where there will be stalls and a display.
Rhythmstix, a drumming group based for people with learning and physical disabilities based at the Pottergate Centre in Alnwick. are performing at the Alnwick International Music Festival 2013. Their vibrant energy and dynamism will enthuse audiences as the rolling sound beats across the stage. Service users from the Pottergate Centre will also have stalls in the reception at Wansbeck General Hospital on Thursday, 22nd August from 10.30am until 2pm and be enjoying a BBQ on Wednesday 21st. Tickets are available from at the centre at £5 per person.
Hayley believes that all people should be treated with dignity and said “it is important that everyone is treated with respect and allowed to make their own choices about their lives” Hayley feels that independence is important. “I get the most satisfaction when my views are listened to.”
