The survey is also looking at issues such as disaster preparedness, ie questions like the estimated time to evacuate and the level of additional support needed in an emergency, etc...
Margareta Wahlström, head of UNISDR, says the survey “has the potential to provide a very revealing insight into how we can reduce disaster risk for people living with disabilities...”
30 million people living with a disability are thought to be affected by earthquakes and weather related disasters in an average year...
Partners for the survey include Malteser-International, UN ENABLE, The Disability-inclusive DRR Network for Asia and the Pacific (DiDRRN), World Bank/Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery; and the University of Connecticut, Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities...
It is intended that the release date for the survey on the International Day for Disaster Reduction will further the consultation process with the intention of extending and improving the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA)...
HFA, the UN's global disaster risk reduction plan was adopted in 2005 and runs out in 2015...
The goal is part of overall moves in the international development community for a disability inclusion roadmap post-2015...
Various charities including ADD International and Leonard Cheshire Disability have been appealing in recent years for people with disabilities to be included in humanitarian disaster planning; and the development of new Millennium Development Goals post-2015...
