PERHAPS one of the most marginalised groups of people in the country are those suffering from disabilities.
Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni believes it is of vital importance for people with disabilities to feature in the ministry's annual corporate plan meeting.
"There have been great strides done already to see the new disability decree this year," she said.
"Likewise, Fiji will ratify the Convention of Rights of Disabled Persons soon and that is a new marking.
"The stimulus for the support-driven approach for disabled persons is really welcoming to all."
Dr Luveni said the poor and other social ills would require greater stakeholder involvement and she encouraged ministry employees to step up and deliver services to people in need.
"Addressing poverty within government agencies needs better co-ordination and I do hope newer attempts will be sealed to show products to service the poor.
"The establishment of the new Poverty Benefit Scheme should pave the way now to reach the next level of welfare.
"It should mainstream the worst-offs across all divisions. Newer standard operating procedures will assist in the quick turnaround of processing across all departments."
The two-day meeting in Nadi concluded yesterday.
