Australia will appoint an ambassador to advocate for people with disability in the developing world.

The Minister for International Development, Melissa Parke, announced the creation of the position of Australian Ambassador for Disability-Inclusive Development on Monday.

Ms Parke said the person, who would be appointed in coming weeks, would ensure people with disability were included in, and benefited equally from, Australia's aid program.

She said the person would champion the inclusion of disability in a new global development framework, ask partner governments to do their part in supporting people with disability, and ensure that Australia sets a leading example through its aid program.

''Australia will be the first country to have an ambassador focused solely on disability-inclusive development,'' Ms Parke said.

''We are demonstrating to the world how central the matter of disability inclusion is to our international aid efforts,'' she said.

Ms Parke said people with disability were the world's largest and most disadvantaged minority, accounting for around 15 per cent of the global population.

She said people with disability had poorer health outcomes, lower educational achievements, less economic participation and higher rates of poverty than people without disability.
