Disability Resources is the unit in the university responsible for coordinating and leading compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding accommodations for students, guests, and visitors with disabilities. The department is responsible for providing all classroom, residence hall, and event accommodations. The university is required by federal legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504, to provide services specifically outlined as accommodations for students with disabilities. This position exists to act as resource to the broader campus community to ensure equal access for students, guests, and visitors with disabilities. More specifically, this position provides academic support, advising, and counseling to undergraduate and graduate students with both physical and non-physical disabilities. Alumni, incoming, prospective, and non-degree seeking students, and students with temporary disabilities are also served. This position also provides advising and support to faculty and staff regarding working with students with disabilities in their classes and programs. The person in this position coordinates the accommodations offered through Disability Resources, promotes its services to the campus and community, and provides ongoing training to the campus community regarding the ADAAA. The overall purpose of this job is to assist in providing quality services to students with disabilities to allow them equal access to all university programs and activities. The person in this position enforces the university’s compliance with the (ADAAA). EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree in counseling, education, or college student personnel, and a minimum of two years of experience working in a post-secondary institution or an equivalent setting, with experience in disability resources preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for those otherwise qualified candidates. SPECIAL SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES: Knowledge of federal disability laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; knowledge of disabilities and appropriate postsecondary accommodations; competence in counseling and advising; application of principles, practices and techniques of student development; strong knowledge in evaluation and interpretation of student documentation; and techniques for understanding and effectively communicating with individuals of diverse cultures. Skill in interpreting medical and psychological evaluations of disabilities; working with people with a variety of disabilities; analyzing requests for reasonable accommodations and developing and implementing plans for the provision of reasonable accommodations; knowledge of assistive technology; ability to work within strict deadlines for timely responses to disability accommodation requests; ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive student data; ability to problem solve, work independently and collaboratively, organize and multi-task; ability to supervise others; strong communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills; demonstrated experience with mediation and facilitation; and strong competence in counseling and advising skills.
