Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Director provides leadership in the development and implementation of accommodative academic support services in an office recognized as crucial to the success of students with disabilities, approximately 13% of our student body. The Director also supervises two Assistant Directors of Disability and Accessibility Services and the secretary for the DAS office. This is a full-time, 12-month position with an anticipated start date of January 15, 2014. Mission The mission of the Disability and Accessibility Services Office is to ensure that all students with disabilities can freely and actively participate in all facets of University life; to coordinate support services and programs that enable students with disabilities to reach their educational potential and to increase the level of awareness among all members of the University so that students with disabilities are able to perform at a level limited only by their abilities, not their disabilities. Required Qualifications: • Master’s Degree in Special Education or Counseling, or related field. • Minimum of three years of experience in providing service to students with disabilities at the post-secondary level. Five or more years of such experience preferred. • Understanding of the legal requirements of ADAAA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, including key differences between providing reasonable accommodations in the post-secondary academic environment and the K-12 environment. • Demonstrated skill in managing difficult situations involving students, parents, staff, faculty, and community members. • Experience supervising professional staff preferred. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Position Responsibilities: • Provide leadership for design, development, and implementation of disability services, programs, and training for students, faculty, and staff. • Oversee the review of student documentation of disabilities, determination of reasonable accommodations, and appeals or grievances. • Act as the liaison to and representative of Disability and Accessibility Services to offices such as Admissions, Advancement, Athletics, Community and Employee Relations, Student Life and other offices and departments on campus. • Provide oversight in student services to ensure compliance with the ADAAA and other applicable state and federal laws. • Monitor and assess the provision of services to students with disabilities and their levels of academic achievement. • Supervise and foster the professional development of staff. • Provide support services appropriate for students with disabilities, including advising, advocating, referring, and formalizing academic accommodations for all qualified persons under university, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws. • Increase awareness among students whose needs must be identified in order to initiate support by on and off-campus outreach using promotional materials, advertisements, peer-tutor programs already existent in the areas of academic skills and writing, and through networking with students, faculty, and advisement administrators. • Occasional weekend or evening commitments • Other duties as assigned.
