HEAD of the Red Cross Special Development Centre in Honiara, Cathy Anilafa says people need to understand the special need of disability people when it comes to disaster.

Ms Anilafa made the comments when the school for the first time receive disaster awareness program on Tuesday.

She said people with disability are vulnerable to disasters and they need to be well informed of the causes and risks of disasters.

She added yesterday’s disaster awareness program staged at the school is significant that helped the students and staff to understand and learn something out from the activity.

“This is first time for such awareness program to be held at the school as this would help the school board work on its disaster plan,” she said.

Ms Anifala commended the theme of international day of disaster -‘Living with Disability and Disaster’, adding the subject is vital that everybody should work together with disability people before disaster.

SIDT drama group and Red Cross staged several disaster exercises and drama presentation for the disability children.

International day of disaster is marked every 13 October.
