Did you know the library offers free services such as Books-by-Mail and Talking Books for people who have disabilities or can’t get to the library?

Books-by-Mail is a fast and convenient service that supplies printed books, audio books, DVDs and music CDs to adults and children with valid library cards who are unable to visit the Lee County Library System location due to temporary or long-term physical and medical disabilities. Caregivers also qualify for the Books-by-Mail service.

The library’s rich collections are as close as a mailbox through this service, which mails materials in zippered, nylon bags to registered users. Patrons may request materials by phone or mail. Call 533-4444 to find out how to qualify and request an application. Books-by-Mail is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Additionally, the library system provides books and magazines recorded for people who need to “hear” their reading, because of a visual disability or a physical disability that prevents holding a book or turning a page. Talking Books are played on special players provided free by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a division of the Library of Congress. Books and equipment are mailed postage free to qualified and registered users. The collection contains hundreds of thousands of books and recorded magazines for readers of all ages and interests. An application is available from the Florida Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services, or call the Lee County Talking Books Library at 533-4780. The application must be certified by a health care professional.

And, just a reminder that the Friends of the East County Regional Library will hold their book sale on Friday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a great opportunity to pick up a book or DVDs at a reasonable price. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan to stop by. The book sale will be in the library’s meeting room.

The Friends of the East County Regional Library is a not-for-profit organization working to promote, support, and enhance library services. The Friends group helps raise funds to purchase equipment and materials and support library programs that supplement the regular library budget. Membership in the Friends is open to all individuals, families, and organizations wishing to provide support for library programs and services. The Friends meet every second Tuesday September through June at 6:30 p.m.

If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the East County Regional Library or would like to know more about their valuable efforts, please contact the library, or pick up a copy of the Friends brochure located next to the Friends bookshelf. Membership is $5 annually.

Jackie Fling, regional manager, East County Regional Library, 881 Gunnery Road. Call 533-4205 or email jfling@leegov.com.
