Last week the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle announced it planned to open the homes by July. The purpose-built houses will each offer supported accommodation in a group home setting for four to five people with a disability. They will exist as part of a community housing model, where 22 affordable housing units will be built for low-to-middle income earners. The new group homes will be the fourth and fifth in the region to be operated by the diocese's welfare and disability services provider, CatholicCare. Disability services manager Lou Rak said the units would be made available to people who work full-time but may have a lower earning capacity and find it difficult to pay rent in the Newcastle market. The homes will be built in Crebert Street, Mayfield.
