The Director of Special Education, of University of Education, Winneba, Dr Abeiku Hayford has stressed the need for society not to neglect the disability in society, since their plight was not inability.

Dr Hayford said this at a durbar organized by the Effutu Directorate of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) as part of activities to mark the World Disaster Reduction Day celebration held at Winneba.

The Day was marked with the theme “Living With Disability and Disaster”.

As part of the celebration, a massive clean-up exercise was organized in the municipality, talk shows on disaster management and prevention, quiz competition for junior high schools in the area and sensitization at market places.

The durbar was aimed at sensitizing the general public on the effect of disaster and the need for people to eschew negative behaviours which contribute towards the outbreak of disasters as well as for people to be involved with people living with disability in disaster reduction planning and processes.

Dr Hayford expressed the need for people to change their attitude towards the environment to help prevent the outbreak of disasters.

Mr Rolland Quainoo, Effutu Municipal NADMO Coordinator said disaster could be prevented if people stop dumping refuse into gutters/drains, as well as indiscriminate defecation.

He also urged food vendors to adopt and practise food safety in their activities to protect the public from contracting communicable diseases, adding that, it was only when food and other vegetables were well prepared and preserved that safety of consumers could be secured.

“Disaster could occur at any given time but if people change their attitude towards the environment it could go a long way to minimize its effect”.

He therefore, urged all to join hands to create a conducive atmosphere to avoid disasters.
