'Inspirational' Canberrans recognised for disability inclusion work

An "inspirational" Canberra volunteer who has spent 20 years helping young people with intellectual disabilities to speak with confidence has been recognised by the ACT Government.

David Williams, who runs the Confident Speakers program, was named the recipient of the 2016 ACT Chief Minister's Inclusion Award.

Mr Williams started a group looking to help build communication skills and run mock job interviews in the mid-90s.

"David Williams has given two decades of volunteer service mentoring people with down syndrome and intellectual disability," Disabilities Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said.

"[It] really helps them do anything from presenting to a room full of people to advocating effectively for what they need in their own lives."

Mr Williams was recognised alongside several other people who dedicated their time in 2016 to promoting inclusion and opportunity for people with disabilities.

The Emerging Young Leader Award went to 19-year-old Canberran Grace West, a national champion swimmer who is legally blind.

"Grace truly is a leader in our community and example for other young people," Ms Stephen-Smith said.

"Grace campaigned for people with vision impairment, and she's also a high-achieving sportswoman in her own right."

David Fox was awarded for Lifetime Achievements in Support Work, having served in the ACT Fire Brigade and at the Salvation Army Youth Crisis Centre.

Mr Fox and his wife took on the role as House Parents of the Lions and Salvation Army Youth Crisis Centre (LASA) in Weston Creek, where they stayed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

They supported children who experienced severe, prolonged and repeated trauma.

Fifty-two people were nominated for the awards, which is in its 13th year.
