Ginette Trottier of Parkinson Canada and Jerry Fiori of the Ottawa Disability Coalition are joined by Keith Egli (right), the councillor for Knoxdale–Merivale and chair of Ottawa's Transportation Committee, during a safety audit Wednesday morning.

The Ottawa city councillor for Knoxdale-Merivale says he'll investigate what can be done to make Colonnade Road safer after the Ottawa Disability Coalition invited him and the media Wednesday morning to experience first hand the safety risks along the busy road.

Keith Egli, who chairs the city's Transportation Committee, said he's happy to have a discussion with city staff and OC Transpo about the condition of the road.

"I can see why I was invited out," said Egli as he walked on Colonnade Road, which for the most part does not have sidewalks and is not fully serviced by OC Transpo.

Pedestrians in the Nepean business park can walk along a grassy shoulder, but that's not an option in the winter, or anytime of the year for Jerry Fiori and other users of wheelchairs.

'You're forced to walk in the middle of the road'

Fiori, who chairs the Ottawa Disability Coalition, pointed out to Egli that several support agencies have offices on Colonnade, including the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities.

"These not-for-profits choose to locate here because they can't afford the high rent of commercial or residential areas," said Fiori.

Parkinson Canada offers clients access to supports classes and exercise groups on Colonnade Road, but has had clients stay away over safety concerns according to Ginette Trottier, the group's community development coordinator.

"We've lost clients because there's no access to bus service on Colonnade South, and it's not safe to walk. You have to walk on the street. If cars are parked, you're forced to walk in the middle of the road," said Trottier.

Sidewalks not likely soon

Trottier said she's realistic about what can be done to a road that was built at a time when the the standard for accessibility was lower.

"I'm not expecting them to build a sidewalk this summer. We know the budgetary restraints, but there are very easy quick fixes."

As a start, Trottier wants the city to limit on-street parking on Colonnade, and force OC Transpo to serve the entire road.

Following the safety walk, Egli said he would follow-up on Fiori and Trottier's request but acknowledged it will be some time before the city can install sidewalks.

"On an existing road like this, we tend to only look at putting a sidewalk in if we're doing a total renewal."
