State lawmakers are considering increasing the fine for parking in a handicapped parking space if you are nor disabled. Scott Roberson / Daily Journal

Park illegally in one of those blue-lined disability spots, and potentially you’ll face a bigger fine.

State lawmakers are considering a proposal that would double the minimum fine imposed on people who aren’t disabled, but park in disability parking spaces. The Indiana Senate approved raising the minimum fine for illegally parking between the blue lines from $50 to $100, but the House would still have to approve the proposal.

State Sen. Ed Carbonneau, R-Valparaiso, proposed the legislation in the hope of deterring people from taking parking spaces away from disabled veterans and others with physical disabilities. He said his intent was not to bring in more revenue, and a state economic impact analysis couldn’t determine exactly how much money an increase in the fines would bring in.
